RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

With the introduction of the UK Government’s Feed-In Tariff (FIT) scheme for electricity in April 2010 and the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) for heat now scheduled for June 2011, the level of interest in renewable energy is rising. In addition to the ‘feel-good’ factor, installation of renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) panels, solar water heating, heat pumps and biomass boilers is now starting to make sound economic sense.

Sun and wind, however, are particularly inconsistent in the UK and so it is important that installations can exploit renewable energy when it is available, and seamlessly compensate for those occasions when it is not. Frequently this means that systems need to be integrated with existing Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC), home automation and even with the emerging electrical ‘smart grid’.
